New Store in Carthage Will Be Opened June 23 [1976]
Pearl’s Department Store will be opened Wednesday, June 3 at 268 State Street it was announced this week by Elliot Pearl of Glens Falls, president of the corporation.
Mr. Pearl and his son, Jeffrey, who is also active in the family business, were in Carthage Monday to oversee preparations for the store’s opening. Said the younger Mr. Pearl: “We hope Carthage is as excited as we are about coming here.” His father chimed in. “The people of Carthage whom we have met have been very friendly to us and have made us feel most welcome.”
The Carthage store will be the 17th in a chain that was founded in 1908 in Alburg VT by Elliot Pearl’s father Paul I. Pearl who is still active in the business, residing in Alburg and Mount Vernon. Pearl’s Departmernt Stores, Inc, has a wholesale division known as P. I.. Pearl & Company. Its central warehouse is at 153 Maple Street, Glens Falls.
Occupying some 1.600 square feet. the Carthage store will feature complete lines of moderately priced clothing and shoes “for every member of the family” according to the Pearls.
The store has been refur- bished with a paint job, a new bright red sign. new lights. paneling. counters and carpeting. Donald O’Brien is the contractor for the remodeling; his brother. Ray, is doing the painting. and electrical work is by Nelson Hoch.
Mrs. Lillian Martin of Oxbow, who has served as manager of Pearl’s stores in Alexandria Bay and Theresa, will be the manager here. and will be assisted by two saleswomen.
In addition to its stores in Alburg, VT, Glens Falls, Theresa and Alexandria Bay, the corporation has retail operations in Ballston Spa, Canton, Corinth, Danamora, Johnstown, Malone, Rouses Point and Ticonderoga, and in Enosburg Falls, Richford and Swanton, all in Vermont,

Pearl’s Closing After 12 Years on State Street
Three doors up State Street, at 268, Pearl’s Department Store will close on April 16, said a company spokesman from Glens Falls. H said the store is beginning a going out of business sale this week. Pearl’s has been in business at the same location since June 2, 1976 It is one of 19 stores in a New Yor chain founded by P. I. and Bertha Pearl. Both died last year and the family decided to liquidate the business. The stores were offered for sale to respective managers, but onis five managers purchased their locations. The remaining 14 stores will be closed, said the company spokesman. The building where Pearl’s is located is owned by Libero Intorcia, owner of the neighboring donut shop.
